Composition notebook cover

-1/3 yd of main front fabric (10.75" x12.25" , 2.5"x 10.75", (2)- 8"x10.75")

-2.5" for pocket front (2.5" x 14")

-2.5" for pocket back (2.5" x 10.75")

The fabric for the pocket could be the same as the main fabric, but I definitely think contrasting fabric is better. 

-16.25" x 10.75" for inside liner ( I just use a cream solid, but you can use anything you want)

-15" x 9.5" of fusible fleece OR batting. I use scrap batting and sew quilted lines on mine, but I've used fusible fleece before and it works fine and then you don't have to quilt it. 

-9" of 1/4" elastic

Cut the main fabric (1)10.75" x12.25" ,(1)10.75"x2.5", (2)- 10.75"x8"- if your fabric is directional 10.75" is the height.

Cut the fabric for the front of the pocket 2.5"x14"- for directional fabric 14" is the height.

Cut the fabric for the back of the pocket 2.5"x10.75"- for directional fabric 10.75" is the height.

Iron the two 10.75"x8" pieces of the main fabric in half long ways so you have two pieces 4" by 10.75". These are the sleeves.

Iron the front pocket piece in half so your fabric is 2.5" x7". Top stitch about 1/8" on the folded side. This is decorative and not necessary. I think it makes it look more finished.

Place your front pocket piece on top of your bottom pocket piece. Take your 2.5"x10.75" main piece and place it right sides together. With the main piece on top, sew 1/4" on the right side. Iron to the main fabric.

Take this peice and place the 10.75"x12.25" main piece on top lining up the left edges. Sew 1/4" on the left side. Iron to the main fabric. This is the front cover of your notebook.

Take your batting or fusible fleece and center it on the back of the front cover. With fusible fleece make sure the fusible side is down and iron it to the back of your front cover. With batting you may want to pin it.

Top stitch along the sides of the pockets (about 1/8"). For the fleece this is not required, it's just decorative and makes your cover look more finished.

If you are using batting you will need to quilt the top cover to keep the pieces from separating. I quilted straight vertical lines. I usually do diagonal lines. You could also quilt it like a quilt with any design you like.

Once your cover is quilted place it face up. Take your elastic and pin it to the top, about 1.5" from the left side.

Place the two sleeve pieces (10.75"x4") on either side of the cover with raw edges together.

Next place your liner on top right sides together. Pin as desired. I definitely recommend pinning. The pieces like to slide around.

Sew 3/8"-1/2" around the left, top and right sides. Backstitch on the corners, the elastic and at the edges of the sleeves. Pull your elastic down and pin it to the bottom 1.5" in.

Sew across the bottom leaving an opening 3-4" wide for turning. Trim your corners and turn right side out.

Iron

Top stitch along the bottom from one sleeve to the decorative top stitch on the pocket. Make sure the opening is folded nicely and is closed up with the top stitch.

Place your composition notebook in and away you go.
